Recently, in the field of river engineering, various information such as river topography, water level, surface flow velocity, vegetation volume and turbidity can be obtained at high resolution using UAVs equipped with RGB cameras, infrared cameras, lasers, and so on. In addition, new observation techniques such as topography, detailed velocity distribution, and the amount of bedload and suspended sediment have been developed using an ultrasonic Doppler velocimeter (ADCP). In this lecture, the speaker will introduce the results of laboratory's research using the latest measurement techniques, such as the observation of flow and sediment dynamics during floods in a large river in Bangladesh and the management of discharge capacity in a river with much vegetation in Japan, and river development that considers fish habitat. In addition, some of the research results on the Perak River using images taken by satellite, which is currently being conducted in collaboration with Professor Nakayama's laboratory at UTAR, will also be presented.

The process of oil extraction from the fruit bunches generates high volume of palm oil mill effluent (POME) from the palm oil mill industries. Typically, palm oil is produced through a series of sterilization, stripping, digestion, oil extraction and oil clarification process, then followed by kernel separation and drying. Thus, despite its contribution to Malaysia’s economy, palm oil mill effluent has become the major pollutant contributed by palm oil mills when discharge to the environment. Conventional ponding system for POME treatment is still commonly used in Malaysia due to the geographical area where large land is available and constant warm environment to support the treatment of POME. This Industrial sharing session aims to highlight the main challenges faced in term of POME treatment and present protentional effective solutions.
